Gims began his music career as a junior high student. He proceeded to college undertaking studies in correspondence and graphic arts. While at the institution he used to rap with his buddies Sexion d’Assaut while studying. Moreover, Maitre also worked part-time as a messenger at night, traveling for Sexion d’Assaut. Subsequently, he released his first track with Sexion d’Assaut “Coup 2 Pression” and collaborated with JR on the Prototype 3015 duo album. Later on, he decided to add Maître to his titles, Gims, and he also used the alias “le Fléau” (“the Bane”).

Maître actively supported the publication of his album Subliminal on 20 May 2013, as he revealed in the video “Welcome to the Wa Pt. 4: La Consécration.” Maître launched his second album, Mon Coeur was correct on 28 August 2015. The album is divided between Pilule Bleue (15 tracks) and Pilule rouge (11 tracks). The song was number one in France SNEP and Ultratop in Belgium.

On April 26, 2019, Gims re-released his record, Cinture Noire, Transcendence. The album includes 13 new songs and features collaborations with such musicians as Latin singers Maluma and J Balvin, French singer and brother Dadju, French rapper Vitaa, and English singer/songwriter Sting.
